Sunset Tour Description
You will be greeted by your guide at our private property in Kalapana which happens to be the closest starting location for any of the touring companies. The guide will visit with you and go over the safety concerns and some slight rules for the hike. This once in a life time adventure will take about 6 hours round trip and cross some specular old flows from the 1980’s and 90’s where some 200 homes were taken by lava. That’s not the best part of all, as you continue through lava field under beautiful Hawaiian skies your guide will speak of the areas history, lava tubes the old timers, lost subdivision and native vegetation along the way. The terrain is for advanced hikers and is very uneven, but don’t be alarmed because the payoff is worth every penny. We will talk about living next to active lava as we have done since 1985. Our guides work with the entire group along the way in terms of rest stops and breaks, but pace must continue for us to spend as much time as possible at Madem Pele’s Lava show. Now we have arrived at the surface flows on the coastal plain just as the sun starts to set over the Pali. This is where the fun begins as you view the hot active lava flows of Kilauea Volcano and fill the camera with amazing breath taking family pictures. The group will then slowly work their way down while watching the sky fill with the lava plume as we near awesome 50ft ocean cliffs to watch the hot lava enter the ocean as sun fades into the darkness of night. After you can’t take any more heat and your shoes are warm, on come the flashlights as we start our star filled trek back for home were we will arrive at the starting point around 9:00pm.
“Got to see the flow and I got as close as the temperatures would allow me to get! Got lots of photos, and then we walked a few more yards to get to the safe viewing spot for the ocean entry flow. What power! It was quite a show – seeing the lava hit the water and all of the steam coming up. Sometimes you could see the smoking lava rocks flowing out with the receding of the wave. We had plenty of time at the lava and we stayed after the sunset so we could get some great photos in the dark. Highly recommend this hiking tour group! Been there, done that AND got the t-shirt!”
