Aloha, this is Cheryl with Aloha Lava Tours.

For more detailed directions, please see our DIRECTIONS page.

  • We meet at the End Of Highway 130 for the Sunset Tour every evening at 3:00 pm. This is the departure point for all of our hikes.

This hike is 6 miles round trip!

You must be able to hike over VERY UNEVEN TERRAIN, going out during daylight hours returning after dark!
Takes 2 1/2 hours hike in and again back with an hour or so viewing. Returning around 9:30.

Must have good walking shoes or hiking boots.
Closed toed. NO SLIPPERS please. Shorts and T-shirts or lite cargo pants are good.
At least two liters of fluids per person are recommended. Best to eat before you come and pack a lite lunch.

Typically, hikes will last from five to six hours, depending on current conditions. We like to hike in shorts and a light long-sleeved cotton shirt. Thanks to the steady trade winds from the north, the hike itself is usually comfortable.

Please come prepared with:

  1. Small day pack
  2. 2 liters of water per person
  3. Lunch or snacks
  4. Closed-toed sturdy hiking boots or shoes
  5. Light rain jacket or poncho
  6. Sunscreen and sun hat
  7. Don’t forget your camera with fresh batteries!

We provide safe parking on our private property where your car will be locked behind a security gate, Lights, Walking/Poking Sticks and Ponchos if you don’t have a lite rain jacket.

We have water available onsite in case you forget, but prefer you bring about 2 liters for each person. The lava is very warm at the surface and our day hikes can be hot out on the lava fields.

We have bathroom facilities for our clients on our check in location.

Yes, our hiking tours are perfectly safe! In fact its healthy to hike 4+ miles but remember to be prepared for that trek. Aloha Lava Tours is ‘Not Fo Wimps’!
Read our liability waiver form.

What if I’m pregnant? Depending on how far along you are, it’s your decision to make a smart safety first call and your capability to complete the hike. The air quality is fine on our hike, but winds change and we can’t control that at times. Our insurance does not allow us to hike anyone after 3 months into the pregnancy.

Does your company have insurance? Absolutely we our insured, licensed and a legit touring company in Kalapana, Remember lots of these tour companies don’t carry any type of insurance, so check for that when booking your tour.

The location of the lava flow changes from day to day, so be sure to call us 808.987.3456 for up-to-date activity.

If your party consists of 6 or more hikers we can set it up just for your group.

Make sure to browse our Guided Tours page for detailed tour descriptions.
